Abstract

1281227 Gettering S A E S GETTERS SpA 3 Oct 1969 [28 Oct 1968] 48647/69 Heading HID A getter pump comprises a non-evaporable getter material 18 attached to a substrate 17 having radial folds 22 so as to form a structure surrounding the central axis of the pump. The getter material 18 which may be a powder of Zr, Ti, Ta, Nb, Al, or an alloy of two or more of these, e.g. an alloy of 16% Al and 84% Zr, is attached to the central portion of the strip 17, e.g. by rolling or pressing, leaving free margins 21. The strip 17 is preferably of a metal such as iron or stainless steel, which is softer than the getter material 18. The strip is stamped out to provide a number of sections 19 connected by bridging portions 16 and 20 lying in the margins 21, and is folded along these bridging portions. The folded strip is secured, e.g. by spot welds 25 to upper and lower bands 23 and 24 and to flanges 14 and 16 of upper and lower retainers 11 and 12. A heater 30 comprising a wire 32 wound on an insulator 31 is disposed along the axis of the pump. A known arrangement having a plurality of longitudinally folded strips is referred to (Fig. 3, not shown). The pump may be permanently installed in a klystron or image intensifier tube.
