Abstract

1280760 Packaging bales; endless conveyers POLYMER CORP Ltd 4 Dec 1970 [27 Jan 1970] 57810/70 Headings B8A and B8C Rectangular prismatic bales 6 of soft yieldable material are inserted into a carton 1 by a device comprising a tiltable carton-support means for holding a carton in a filling position with a bale-receiving opening of the carton on the carton side and for subsequently tilting a filled carton through 90 degrees to an upright position, a conveyer means for positioning bales resting on a rectangular side face in front of the bale-receiving opening of a carton with the longitudinal axis of each bale parallel to the opening and a pusher 9 for pushing the bales from the conveyer into the carton. As shown, the bales 6 travel up a conveyer 7 and drop into a position 6a on to a roller conveyer 8 which moves the bale forward one position 6b, the conveyer 7 then being restarted to bring another bale to position 6a. The conveyer 8 which comprises a pneumatically-operated transfer beam 40, Fig. 9, for moving the bales along rollers 33, is again actuated to move the first bale on to a bale guide 5 and to move the bale at position 6a to position 6b and to again actuate conveyer 7 to deliver another bale to position 6a. The pusher 9, Fig. 3, which is provided with a raised perimeter 10 and is hydraulically or pneumatically operated is then actuated to move the first bale on the guide 5 partially into the carton and to withdraw the guide to receive the next bale which is then pushed into the carton with the first bale before it. Upon entry of the last bale, the series of bales is driven by the pusher into contact with the base of the carton, after which the guide is withdrawn and the pusher 9 retracts. A scissors jack arrangement 4 is then actuated to lower the carton to position a second compartment in alignment with the guide. After all compartments have been filled, a pneumatically operated tipper mechanism 3 is actuated to move the filled carton to a vertical position for sealing and removal. The device is operated automatically by means of photo-electric cells, limit switches and timers and may be fully automated by inclusion of automatic infeed and discharge conveyers for empty and filled cartons, respectively.
