Abstract
1280499 Catamenial tampon PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 17 Oct 1969 [17 Oct 1968] 51182/69 Heading ASR A catamenial tampon comprises an elongate body of compressed absorbent fibres, at least part of the sides of the body having a surface layer comprising fibre ends which have been loosened and separated from one another. The fibre ends may be loosened to a depth of 1/64 to 5/64 inch from the tampon surface. The fibres are orientated in a direction generally transverse to the longitudinal direction of the tampon and the side surface may contain two to six slits or a helical slit having two to six turns between 1/32 to 3/32 inches depth and four to ten diametrically extending apertures. The tampon is produced by forming from a blank of fibrous material a compressed elongated cylindrical form. The outer fibres are loosened by passing the tampons manually or automatically along one or between two surfaces providing a multiplicity of projecting wire-like prongs of uniform length (see Fig. 4, not shown) which penetrate the tampon surface and disturb the fibres. The slits are produced by spaced circular slicing blades located in a V-shaped support on which the tampon is placed, so that rotation of the blades results in the production of the slits (see Fig. 7). The apertures are made by an elongated sharp object having a diameter between 1/32 and 3/32 inches. A withdrawal string secured by gluing, looping or sewing, is provided.
