1279411 Boring bars; gauging MASSEY FERGUSON PERKINS Ltd 5 May 1969 [6 May 1968] 21414/68 Headings B3B B3C and B3T [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for measuring the wear of a workengaging tool-bit 13 of a machine-tool comprises a transducer 16 of which the inductance varies as its spacing, A, from a metallic workpiece 14. The transducer is calibrated using two plug gauges which define maximum and minimum bore sizes. A machine tool including the transducer has warning lamps which indicate maximum bore size, minimum bore size or 80% tool wear and means to stop the machine when the minimum bore size is achieved. Fig. 8 illustrates a machine tool with two transducers 60, 61 diametrically opposed on a boring bar (21), the signals from which transducers are combined to measure workpiece bore-size. Fig. 9 (not shown) illustrates a machine tool, having a roughing bit (81A) and a finishing bit (82A) on separate boring bars, which is applied to a workpiece (86) having three apertures (86A- 86C) to be enlarged, the transducer (81B) being disposed within the machined aperture (86A) while the aperture (86B) is being machined and so on, so that the amount of swarf around the transducer is reduced. Figs. 10 and 11 (not shown) illustrate a boring bar (90) having two diametrically opposed and axially-spaced tool bits (91, 92) and a passageway (93) which conveys air to the transducers (94, 95) to remove swarf. It is stated that the apparatus may be used on lathe or on a milling, or a grinding machine.
