Abstract
1278974 Liquefying gases LINDE AG 29 Oct 1969 [4 Nov 1968] 52889/69 Heading F4P In a process for liquefying natural gas circulating medium is compressed in a multi-stage compressor, cooled, partially condensed and separated between successive stages, the gas phase being passed to the next compression stage and the liquid phase passed in heat exchange with the gas to be liquefied, expanded and returned to the first compression stage. In a circuit having two compression stages the circulating medium is fed to a first compressor 2, partially liquefied in a cooler 3, and the liquid collected in a separator 4 passed through a heat exchanger 5, expanded through a valve 6, vaporized in the heat exchanger 5 and returned via a line 1 to the compressor 2. Gas from the separator 4 is mixed with gas to be liquefied in line 7, fed to a compressor 8, cooler. 9, and the partially liquefied gas passed into a separator 10. The liquid collected is sub-cooled in exchanger 5, expanded through valve 11 and recycled via line 1 as before; part of the sub-cooled liquid is expanded through a valve 13 into a line 27 to a gasometer. Gas from separator 10 is partly condensed in exchanger 5, and both resulting phases collected in separator 14 and passed through a heat exchanger 15. The sub-cooled liquid is expanded and recycled as before, and the gas is again partly condensed, collected in separator 16 and both phases passed through an exchanger 17. The sub-cooled liquid is recycled as before and the partially liquefied gas phase collected in a separator 18, both phases being cooled in heat exchanger 19. The liquid resulting in separator 20 is united with liquid from separator 18, passed through a heat exchanger 21, expanded and recycled. Vapour from separator 20 is liquefied in exchangers 21 and 23 and expanded through valve 24 into a storage tank 25; part of the flow is expanded through valve 26 into the line 27 which passes back through exchangers 23, 21, 19, 17, 15 and 5 to the gasometer. Vapour from tank 25 is fed via a line 28, a cold gas blower 29 into line 27. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the gas to be liquefied is not added to the circulating medium, and is passed through the heat exchangers in a separate circuit.
