1278765 Feeding webs to packaging machines CLOUD MACHINE CORP 27 Jan 1970 3988/70 Headings B8C and B8R In a packaging machine comprising a plow 26 for longitudinally folding a web 23, and a rotary heat sealer 31 having lands 32 for transversely sealing the web 23 to form pockets 33 therein, the position of the lands 32 is sensed by a registration unit 76 and marks (112, Fig. 7, not shown) on the web 23 are sensed by a photocell 100 and the results used to vary the diameter of a deformable roller 52, over which the web 23 is trained, to thereby vary the path of travel of said web 23 to maintain said lands 23 and said marks (112) in registry. The registration unit 76 comprises a cam 86 mounted on a rotating shaft on which the heat sear 31 is mounted, the can 86 operating a microswitch 80. When the microswitch 80 is closed and the photo-cell 100 is detecting a mark (112) current is supplied to a solenoid valve 104 causing the latter to open and supply compressed air to a cylinder 106. A piston 108 is thus extended and pivots a lever 110 which causes the diameter of the roller 52 to vary. The roller 52 comprises a rubber sleeve engaged by two collars 52c, 52d, the latter collar 52d being engaged by the lever 110 to axially compress and radially expand the sleeve 52. The web 23 is supplied from a roll 22 and the tension of the web is controlled by a dancer roller 50 mounted on a brake lever 68 which rotates a brake arm 64 to which a brake belt 62 is secured. The brake belt 62 extends around a brake drum carried by a shaft 24 on which the roll 22 is carried. After the pockets 33 have been formed they. are filled at a filling station 37, separated by a cutter 39 and closed by a pair of heat sealing bars 40.
