Abstract
1278509 Electro-chemical analysis ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AB 27 Oct 1969 [28 Oct 1968 2 Oct 1969] 52472/69 Heading G1N A probe for determining oxygen in molten metal comprises a plug of solid electolyte not more than 1 mm. dia fixed through a hole in the end of a closed silica tube containing the reference gas, preferably air. As shown a cylindrical plug 13 of zirconia is sealed by fusing in a hole 12 in a silica tube 10 which is detachably mounted in a hoder 15 e.g. by a screwed or bayonet joint. Internal connection is made by a platinum wire 18 passing through an aluminium oxide rod 21, urged by spring 23 into contact with the electrolyte 13. The counter electrode may be a surrounding cylinder 24 of molybdenum, tungsten, chromium or iron. Modifications: (i) The internal connecting wire may be part of a Pt/PtRo thermocouple; (ii) The counter electrode may be flame sprayed on the outside of the silica tube 10, and covered with a protective layer e.g. of aluminium oxide; aluminium magnesium spinel or silica, Fig. 2 (not shown); (iii) the electrolyte cylinder 13 may project inside the tube and have its inner end "platinized" to contact the platinum wire wound round it Fig. 3 (not shown). (iv) The reference gas may be oxygen with carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.
