1278597 Electric selective signalling MOLINS MACHINE CO Ltd 15 July 1969 [16 July 1968] 33877/68 Heading G4H A data-processing system for use with, e.g., cigarette manufacturing machines M comprises a testing device T associated with each machine, a slave transmitter and receiver S.T.R. associated with each testing device and a master transmitter and receiver M.T.R. connected to the slave units by a common bus C.B. Each of the slave units translates data from its associated testing device into digital form for transmission to the master transmitter over the bus C.B. The master transmitter is connected to a data processing machine C and is arranged to establish communication with the slave units in sequence and transmit control signals to each slave unit to cause them to transmit their translated data. The system also includes means for carrying random samples of the cigarettes to a measuring device C.M.E. Trays containing random samples from each machine are carried by a conveyer S.C. to the measuring equipment and the results may be used for comparison with the digital data. Each tray carries a coated magnetic pattern on its side for identification. The measuring equipment data may be transmitted to the data-processing machine C in the interval between digital transmission cycles and may be compared with the digital data for error detection purposes. Each slave unit has a digital address to which it responds by becoming ready to transmit data. The slave units may also be arranged to transmit their address before the data to ensure that the correct unit has responded. The system also provides an analogue link AL from the slave units which is passed through an A-D converter and thence to the data-processing device C. The analogue signals from, e.g. a beta-ray density checker are received simultaneously with the digital data from the slave units but in a different time sequence. The analogue data may for example be transmitted by the unit S.T.R.1 during the time that digital data is being transmitted by the units S.T.R.l-6, then S.T.R.2 transmits its analogue data during the time that units S.T.R.1-6 are transmitting digital data and so on. The dataprocessing machine is arranged to accumulate the total number of cigarettes produced by each machine and the total number rejected for every possible cause and to compute trends from the data received.
