Abstract

1278428 Anchoring railway sleepers BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD 14 July 1970 [5 Aug 1969] 39095/69 Heading E1G In a railway track comprising rails 2 supported on transverse sleepers 1 embedded in ballast 6, adjacent sleepers 1 are interconnected by longitudinal planks 5 extending edgewise into the ballast at least to the depth of the sleepers, the planks 5 engaging vertically-extending sleeper slots which allow relative vertical movement. The planks 5 serve to resist lateral movement of the sleepers. As shown the sleepers 1 are of concrete and have projections 3, 4 defining the vertically extending slots.
