Abstract
1278222 Release valves in anti-lock braking systems FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 21 April 1971 10368/71 Heading F2F A full pressure hydraulic anti-lock braking system incorporates a brake release valve assembly 10 which is actuable by a solenoid 34 responsive to a skid signal from a sensor to relieve the pressure at one or more slave cylinders. The valve assembly 10 comprises an inlet chamber 12 divided by a diaphragm 14 into a brake side 15 and a control side 16, and a release chamber 13 divided by a diaphragm 17 into a brake side 18 and a control side 19; the brake side 15 has an inlet port 20 connected to a master cylinder or foot valve of the system and the brake side 18 has an outlet 25 connected to the slave cylinder(s) and the two sides 15, 18 are interconnected by a passage 26. The port 20 has a valve seat 21 with which the diaphragm 14 can co-operate to shut off communication between the master cylinder or brake valve and the slave cylinder(s); the cliaphragm 14 is sand wiched at its edges between a main perforated brace 22 and an annular perforated brace 23 which supports the diaphragm 14 when it is in engagement with the seat 21, and a perforated brace 24 is situated on the brake side 18 of the release chamber 13. The solenoid 34 controls a spool 33 which is biased by a spring 35 and which in its normal position as in Fig. 1 has the control side 16 connected to exhaust or sump of the hydraulic system by a port 31 and the control side 19 connected to a high-pressure supply or accumulator by a port 30. When the solenoid 34 is energized the spool 33 is urged to the left to connect the side 16 to high-pressure by port 30 and the side 19 to sump by port 32. This causes diaphragm 14 to engage seat 21 and diaphragm 17 to be displaced to thereby release the brakes. A passage 36 connects the inlet port 20 to the brake side 15 of the inlet chamber 12 so that if the brakes are released when the valve 14, 21 is closed there is no delay in complete release of the brakes.
