Abstract

1276820 Analysing gases electrically INSTITUT TEKHNICHESKOI TEPLOFIZIKI AKADEMII NAUK UKRAINSKOI SSR 25 March 1971 7783/71 Heading G1N [Also in Divisions G4 and H2] Apparatus for measuring the concentration of an oxidizable gas in a gas mixture comprises a catalyst detector element 19, 21, Fig.2, in a bridge circuit 3 fed with D.C. through a bi-stable multi-vibrator 2 and associated with an alarm circuit 8, whereby at a critical gas concentration the multi-vibrator is caused to periodically disconnect the bridge circuit from the D.C. supply 1 and activates the alarm circuit. As applied to measuring methane concentration, the bridge circuit 3 comprises two platinum heaters 21, 22, the latter surrounded by a passive cylinder of aluminium oxide 20 and the former surrounded by a similar cylinder 19 but carrying platinumpalladium catalyst material. The bridge 3 is completed by resistors 23, 24, 25. The normal D.C. voltage from source 1 causes transistor 31 to conduct, followed by transistors 12, 13, whereby the D.C. voltage is fed via transistor 12 to the bridge network 3, whose output is indicated on a meter 4 and is also fed to the control winding 46 on a magnetic amplifier 7. The latter is energized by A.C. from inverter 5 through main windings 41, 42 and its output from winding 45 is rectified at 47 and developed across resistor 16. At a predetermined output from bridge 3 the voltage across resistor 16 blocks multi-vibrator 2 to de-energize bridge 3 and magnetic amplifier 7 until multi-vibrator 2 automatically reverts, the time interval being universely proportional to the gas concentration. During this interval transistor 52 allows A.C. from inverter 5 to energize alarms 57, 59, which continue to operate intermittently with high methane concentration. An electronic relay circuit 6 senses the level of the D.C. voltage 1. If this falls below a value determined by Zener diodes 39, 40, transistors 31, 32 are blocked, followed by multi-vibrator 2 and alarms 57, 59 are continuously energized.
