Abstract
1276896 Making pinions and valve sleeves; welding by pressure and fusion ADWEST ENG Ltd 26 Oct 1970 [25 July 1969 28 Nov 1969] 37624/69 and 58423/69 Headings B3A and B3R In making a component an intermediate part with grooves or channels in a surface thereof is assembled between two end parts which close the ends of the grooves or channels and the parts are electron beam or friction welded together. At least one of the parts may be heattreated prior to assembly and welding. A rotary valve sleeve 10, Fig. 1, for motor vehicle power assisted steering devices comprises a cylindrical shank 12, an intermediate part 11 and an end part 13 electron beam or friction welded together at 16. The welded sleeve has a bore 17 and counterbore 14, 18 axial channels or grooves 14a on the surface of the counterbore and annular channels 15a on its outer surface, the component parts having been machined prior to welding. Valve sleeve 10, Fig. 4, may be passed in a batch beneath electron beam welding means 22 by a carriage comprising gear-wheels 23 and a chain 24 which rotates the sleeves, the parts of each valve sleeve being clamped on a rod 26. Welding may take place in a vacuum chamber. A pinion for a rack and pinion steering mechanism is machined with teeth from bar stock and heat-treated and two cylindrical members are electron beam or friction welded to the ends of the machined portion.
