Abstract

1276718 Measuring stress electrically RICARDO & CO ENGS (1927) Ltd 19 April 1971 [10 Dec 1969] 60273/69 Heading G1N The stresses in a loaded mechanical component are determined by measuring the strains in a rubber model of the component, using a variable inductance fixed to the component at the desired locations, the relationship between the stresses in the model and the actual component being dependent on their relative physical characteristics. The transducer 30, Fig.2, comprises a solenoid coil 31 and coaxial ferrite rod core 33, each mounted on a pin 32, 34 located a fixed distance apart. For testing a connecting rod for a V8 piston engine, a rubber model 10, Fig.1, is assembled round a roller 11 mounted on a board 12 and representing the big end. The small end is loaded through a proof ring 14A by a screw 16 acting on a block 15 attached to this end of the connecting rod. Additional loading by screw 25 is applied to secondary bearing 20 at an adjustable angle. Transducers 30 are attached to the rubber model at desired test locations, and the change in inductance, preferably converted by a tuned circuit to a change in frequency, is proportional to the local strain and stress. The model may be made of different grades of rubber to simulate a composite component of different materials.
