Abstract

1276534 Thermoelectric devices BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 1 June 1970 [11 July 1969] 34999/69 Heading H1K [Also in Division F1] A vapour trap, suitable for condensing petrol vapour escaping from the fuel tank or carburetter vent of a vehicle, comprises one or more Peltier modules 13 including cold faces in thermal contact with a vapour duct 10 having a vapour inlet 11, an air outlet 12 and a liquid drain 17. Enamel coated wire in the duct 10 assists heat transfer to the modules. The hot faces of the modules may be mounted on metal plates 14, forming one wall of water filled heat buffers 16, by electrically insulated washers 15. The heat buffers may be finned blocks of metal and a vortex cooler may be arranged to operate from the air flow caused by vehicle movement. The two modules 13 illustrated may be connected in series with a battery and controlled by a thermostatic switch which turns off the current below a preset ambient temperature in the vehicle engine compartment. The hot faces of the modules may be provided with fins.
