Abstract
1276228 Laminates PAPER CONVERTING MACHINE CO Inc 2 July 1970 [31 July 1969] 32144/70 Heading B5N A fibrous sheet is produced by uniting two flexible fibrous webs with an intervening heat shrinkable flexible thermoplastic web along a plurality of lines to form a plurality of unbonded areas each having lines of union as at least a partial boundary thereof, heating the web assembly to induce heat shrinkage of the thermoplastic web to cause the unbonded areas of the thermoplastic web between adjacent lines of union to become thicker than the thermoplastic web at the lines of union and to cause the unbonded areas of the fibrous webs to bulge into pillow-like contours, and controlling the conditions of heating as to time, temperature, pressure and tension to selectively develop minute openings of the order of 0À001 to 0À0002 inch diameter in the thermoplastic web adjacent the lines to control the permeability of the web assembly. The fibrous webs may be of paper, e.g. tissue, or non-woven webs made from viscose rayon fibres, and the thermoplastic web which may be “-2 mils thick may be of polyethylene or polypropylene. In Fig. 1 fibrous webs 16 and 18 unwound from rolls 13 and 14 on stands 10 and 12 are embossed in units 19 and 22 having embossing rolls 20, 21 and 23, 24 respectively and thermoplastic web 17 unwound from roll 15 on stand 11 and passed over idler roll 25 is positioned against web 18 when passing over idler roll 26 and is contacted with web 16 when passing over idler roll 27. The three webs are united by means of laminating unit 28 comprising heated drum 29 carried on frame 30 and provided with raised portions on its surface in a pattern corresponding to the lines of union, against which the webs are pressed by endless belt 31. The laminated web assembly 38 is then passed through heating unit 42 comprising heating rolls 44, 45 and 46 and cooling rolls 47, 48 and 49, the surface speeds of which are independently controlled to compensate for the various amounts of shrinkage in the web which is introduced due to the heating and cooling, and taken up on rewind mechanism 56.
