Abstract
1276023 Coated polypropylene film KALLE AG 29 Aug 1969 [30 Aug 1968 21 July 1969] 43206/69 Heading B2E [Also in Division B5] A biaxially stretched film from polypropylene, especially isotactic polypropylene, or from a copolymer or mixture of 99 to 90% by weight of polypropylene and 1 to 10% by weight of polyethylene, the polypropylene having a density of 0.90 to 0.92 g/cc a crystallinity of 40 to 70% and a crystallite melting point of 160 to 165‹C, which film has been stretched in the transverse direction by tentering and is characterised by the properties of (a) the modulus of elasticity being greater than 220kg/mm<SP>2</SP> in any direction in the film plane, (b) the ratio of the modulus of elasticity in the longitudinal direction to that in the transverse direction being in the range from 0.75 to 1.25, (c) the tensile strength being above 20 kg/mm<SP>2</SP> in any direction of the film plane, (d) the ratio of the tensile strength in the longitudinal direction to that in the transverse direction being in the ratio from 0.85 to 1.15, (e) the tensile elongation at break being below 80% in any direction of the film plane, and (f) shrinkage being not more than 10% in any direction of the film plane may be prepared by the following steps in sequence: (a) the polymer film is extruded at 200‹ to 300‹C, (b) the extrudate is cooled to a temperature of 15‹ to 80‹C, (c) the film is heated to 40‹ to 10‹C below the crystallite melting point, (d) longitudinal stretching is performed within this temperature range at a draw ratio of 6:1 to 8:1, (e) the film is cooled to 100‹ to 10‹C below the crystallite melting point, (f) the film is heated to 5‹ to 20‹C above the temperature for longitudinal stretching, (g) transverse stretching by tentering is performed in this temperature range at a draw ratio of 6:1 to 8:1, (h) the film is thermofixed under tension at a temperature in the range from 35‹C below the crystallite melting point to the crystallite melting point, the width being allowed to decrease during thermofixation by 2 to 10% and (i) the film is cooled to below 50‹C. The films may have a deviation from the planar condition of less than 0.10%. The thin substantially non-shrinking film produced may be used as produced or coated on one or both sides with for example polyvinylidene chloride for films with oxygen impermeability, polyvinyl chloride/polyvinyl acetate copolymer or thermoplast as for example polyethylene for heat sealable films.
