Abstract
1276019 Rolling ARCHER PRODUCTS Inc 18 Oct 1969 51249/69 Heading B3M [Also in Division F2] Apparatus for rounding the edges of a metal strip 3 comprises rolls 65, Fig. 5, mounted on a beam 69 pivoted on a column 67, acting on each edge of the strip. The columns 67 are mounted on air bearings 68 so that they float on a platform 23, Fig. 10, and are resiliently biased toward each other by links 71. Edge thickness control rolls 32 are mounted by means of a pivoted frame 36 above and below the strip on each edge thereof. Each roll 65 has a semicircular cross-section groove 65a which engages the edge of the strip and which is cleaned by means of a doctor blade, Figs. 11, 19 and 20 (not shown). Between opposed pairs of rolls 65 anti-buckle rolls 66 are located which are biased towards each other by rolls 81 and 85 mounted on hubs 66a. The rolls 81, 85 are secured to beams 83, 86 carried by shafts 84, 88 which are biased toward each other by spring assemblies 89. The two edge thickness control rolls 32 on each edge are biased towards each other by means of a pneumatic cylinder, Figs. 7-9 (not shown), mounted in a carriage 40. The rolls may be arranged to provide a tapered edge on the strip. The carriage is carried on air bearings resting on the platform 23 so that it is freely pivotable about a post 37 to which it is linked by arms 38, 39. A turnbuckle 4 alters the relative angular positions of the arms 38, 39 to alter the position of rolls 32 on the strip. In an alternative construction the rolls 32 may be pivoted about posts 67 which are in turn positioned by leaf springs 98 secured to posts 37. In another embodiment of the apparatus, Fig. 17, a frame 114 is mounted on air bearings 113 and carries edge rolls 110 and thickness control rolls 121, the angle 126 between the axes of rolls 121 and the edge of the strip being less than 90 degrees. The part of the frame carrying the upper roll 121 is pivoted at 120 and secured at its other end to a pneumatic cylinder 116 to bias the two rolls 121 toward each other. A chain 125 attached to a fixed part of the apparatus prevents movement of the frame 114 in the direction of motion of the strip 3. A strip 3, Fig. 2, is first passed through a cleaning station 5 in which the edges of the strip are cleaned by brushes 18, the middle of the strip being held flat by air pressure exerted through plenum chambers 19, 20 on each surface of the strip. Means 31, comprising slit tubes engaging the edges of the strip, Figs. 22- 24 (not shown), clean away any dirt by means of compressed air or other cleaning fluid before the strip is rolled in rolling station 6. After rolling the strip surface is cleaned by brushes 34 and its edges cleaned by means 31. Feelers 29 placed adjacent the edges of the strip are linked to drive motors which drive the platform 23 laterally with respect to the direction of motion of the strip. After the final cleaning step the strip is sprayed with oil and coiled on a take-up reel 11, Fig. 18 (not shown), the take-up reel providing the only means for driving the strip throughout the process.
