Abstract
1275735 Pyrotechnic signal devices PAINSWESSEX Ltd 27 May 1969 [2 July 1968] 31598/68 Heading F3A A pyrotechnic signal device comprises a casing 1 housing a combustible smoke composition 2, a percussion cap 16 for igniting the composition, and a repeatedly operable firing device 3 having a firing pin 17, the firing device being in releasable engagement with the casing and forming a handle for the signal device. The composition 2 is thermally insulated with paper asbestos 4 and plaster of Paris 8, and is ignitable via an axial passage, primed cambric 10 and a priming composition 9. A perforated disc 11 bears against the primed cambric. An aluminium collar 13, a baffle disc 14 and a displaceable shellac-covered paper washer 15 define a cooling chamber 12 for the smoke. A manually removable cap 5 is secured to the casing 1 with adhesive tape 6. The percussion cap 16 is centre- or rim-fire. The firing pin 17 is centrically or eccentrically mounted on a spring loaded plunger 18. The firing pin is normally held in a semi-retracted position by engagement of a screw 20 in a transverse branch of a longitudinal slot 21, but is fully retracted when used to fire the percussion cap. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) in which the smoke composition is replaced by a flare composition, the cooling chamber and washer 15 are omitted, the plaster of Paris is replaced by clay, and the axial passage is lined with a synthetic resin-bonded paper tube (26). The end cap 5 is not removed prior to ignition and is melted or displaced by the burning flare composition.
