Abstract

1,274,811. Electrical insulating oils. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 27 Jan., 1970 [28 Jan., 1969], No. 3825/70. Headings C5E and C5F. An electrical insulating oil is made by solvent extracting a waxy paraffinic vacuum gas oil fraction having a 5-95% boiling range of 550- 750‹ F., dewaxing the extracted fraction to a pour point of + 20‹ to - 25‹ F. and separating the dewaxed oil into at least three fractions such that the insulating oil is recovered as a heart cut having a 5-95% boiling range of 580- 720‹ F. An oil 2 is extracted at 12 by a countercurrent of phenol or furfural at 120-250‹ F. and up to 250 p.s.i.g. to remove aromatics and polar components. The raffinate 5 is diluted with liquid propane, methyl ethyl ketone and/or methyl isobutyl ketone and dewaxed by cooling to between +20‹ and -40‹F. and filtering. The diluent is flashed from the dewaxed oil which is then hydrofined at 16 with a catalyst of oxides or sulphides of Co and Mo, Ni and Mo or Ni and W at 350-650‹ F. and a hydrogen pressure of 300-900 p.s.i.g. The hydrofined oil is fractionally distilled to provide an overhead fraction 10(a), an insulating oil fraction 10(b) and a bottom fraction 10(c). The fraction 10(c) can be used as such as a lubricating oil or a heavier fraction 10(d) can first be removed therefrom. A transformer oil comprises the insulating oil stream 10(b) and 0À06% of a 2,6-ditertiary butyl paracresol oxidation inhibitor and 0À07% of a wax-alkylated naphthalene pour-point depressant.
