A lighting system for a vehicle comprises a first and a second voltage sources of equal voltage rating-such as batteries 11, 12-first and second main beam headlamps 23, 24 and first and second dipped beam headlamps 26, 27 all of which lamps have a voltage rating equal to that of one of the sources 11 or 12; a dip switch 17 and a lighting switch 16 which, when closed, provides a feed to the dip switch 17, the dip switch having a first position in which it connects the first and second main beam headlamps 23, 24 across the first and second voltage sources 11, 12 respectively and a second position in which it connects the first and second dipped beam headlamps 26, 27 across the first and second voltage sources 11, 12 respectively. The two voltage sources may comprise two batteries 11, 12 connected in series as shown in Fig. 1 with a terminal 15 provided at the interconnection or the sources may comprise a single battery with a centre tapping, each half of which battery has a voltage rating of the first or second sources. The system may also include other lamps associated with a vehicle such as side and tail lamps, stop lamps, direction indicator lamps and a direction indicator warning lamp all of which lamps have a voltage rating equal to that of the voltage of one of the sources 11 or 12.
