Abstract
1,274,769. Phosphatizing metal surfaces. HOOKER CHEMICAL CORP. Dec. 18, 1969 [Dec. 20, 1968], No. 61833/69. Heading C7U. Metals are prepared for (electro-)painting by a two-stage phosphatizing process comprising treatment with (1) a zinc phosphate or iron phosphate conversion coating solution and (2) a zinc phosphate conversion coating solution containing ions of one or more of Ca, Mn, and Ba, the solution having pH 2À0 to 3À5, total acidity of 10-20 points and being applied for 20 seconds to 3 minutes at 60 to 75‹ C. Suitable solutions for the first step are (1) aqueous alkali metal or ammonium phosphate, with an accelerator, e.g. ClO 3 <SP>-</SP>, NO 2 <SP>-</SP>or BrO 3 <SP>-</SP> (2) hydroxylamine phosphate with hydroxylamine sulphate or hydrochloride, (3) alkali metal or ammonium phosphate plus wetting agent, (4) zinc hydrogen phosphate + Zn(NO 3 ) 2 buffer, and (5) solution (4) plus NI<SP>++</SP>, SiF 6 <SP>=</SP>, and F<SP>-</SP>, whilst solutions for the second step are of Zn(H 2 PO 4 ) 2 and Zn(NO 3 ) 2 with the zinc ion partially substituted by Ca, Mn or Ba; an accelerator, e.g. ClO 3 <SP>-</SP> or NO 3 <SP>-</SP>, may be added. Conventional degreasing and mixing with water or chromic acid may be used as appropriate, and the electro-deposited paint may be a watersoluble epoxy resin paint; the metal is iron or steel.
