Abstract

1,274,761. Heating devices utilizing exothermic chemical reactions; tracer devices for missiles. MESSERSCHMITT - BOLKOWBLOHM G.m.b.H. 31 July, 1969 [3 Aug., 1968], No. 38418/69. Headings F3A and F4X. [Also in-Division C5] An infra-red radiator 8 comprises a thinwalled hermetically sealed tube filled substantially completely with a pyrotechnic incandescent composition 12 which burns without developing a sufficient amount of gas to rupture the tube. The tube, which may be made of metal less than 1 mm. thick or of oxide ceramic or graphite, can be of any desired cross-sectional shape, and a preferred composition has the following constituents: red lead 66%, silicon 24%, ferrosilicon 6%, ferric oxide 2%, together with an inorganic binding agent or nitro-cellulose lacquer. The radiator is designed to be carried by a missile, three arcuate tube sections (9-11) being arranged end-to-end around the propulsion nozzle 5 of the missile with ignition devices (13) disposed between the opposed end faces of the sections. An optical filter (42) and/or a rotating spoke-type shield may be provided to modulate the radiation, and the walls of the cavity in which the radiator is mounted may be provided with a reflective surface 27 of aluminium.
