Abstract

1,274,292. Dart containing an immunizing commensal. J. J. L. RICARD. 29 April, 1969. No. 2529/72. Divided out of 1,274,291. Heading ASE. [Also in Division C6] A device for counteracting a harmful living micro organism in plant material selected from live trees, seedlings thereof and wood products, comprises a dart which is an elongated piece of wood, plastics or other suitable material, adapted to be introduced into the plant material and containing at least one immunizing commensal, that is a living micro organism capable of propagating in the plant material without damaging the useful properties thereof and having a curative or preventative effect with respect to the harmful micro organism. The dart optionally has an arrow tip of hard material and may be an impregnated dart 13 (Fig. 1), a two part dart 21, 25 (Fig. 2), a complex dart comprising a hollow dowel 21 filled with sawdust 23 (Fig. 2), a complex dart comprising a veneer section 31 wrapped around part 33 (Fig. 3) or a complex dart comprising two-component hollow portion 41a, 41b and core 43 (Fig. 4). A list of immunizing commensals is disclosed, those particularly exemplified being Trichoderma album, Gliocladium roseum, Scytalidium sp. and Ceratocystis piceae. The two part or complex darts may contain a second immunizing commensal, or a chemical or a micro organism favourable to the development of the effect of the first commensal, e.g. a micro organism which induces antibiotic release or combats interfering substances (Mucor sp., Coniophora cerebella. Poria vaporaria may be used) or stimulates antagonistic activity (Poria carbonica may be used). The darts may be used in the methods according to Specification No. 1,274,291.
