[Also in Division C7] A metal substrate is provided with a corrosion resistant resin free coating by applying a hexavalent chromium containing liquid composition and a pulverent metal which is less noble in electro motive force series than the predominated metal in the substrate and which is selected from Al, Mn, Zn, Mg and alloys or mixtures thereof, and heating the substrate to evaporate the volatiles from the liquid composition and leave a residue in intimate contact with the pulverent metal. The liquid compositions may contain chromic acid or its equivalent 20% or less of the dichromates of NH 4 <SP>+</SP>, Na<SP>+</SP>, K<SP>+</SP>, Ca<SP>++</SP>, Ba<SP>++</SP>, Mg<SP>++</SP>, Zn<SP>++</SP>, Cd<SP>++</SP>, Sr<SP>++</SP>, or mixed chromium compounds as well as reducing agents, e.g. a polyalcohol or an organic acid, phosphoric acid or a compound of phosphorous pigments, surface active agents and manganese compounds to extend the bath life. The liquid medium may be water or alcohol or mixtures thereof. The compositions may be applied by dipping, spraying or electrolysis to the substrate which is preferably heated. The pulverent metal may be applied by brushing, blasting or electrostatically or as a dispersion in water, organic liquids or the liquid composition which may be applied by dipping, rollers, curtain coating, spraying or brushing. The coated substrate is preferably quenched in dilute phosphoric acid after baking. Further coatings of the composition or of a welding primer which contains electrically conductive particles dispersed in resin or rubber may be applied. A top coating of paints or enamels may also be applied.
