Abstract
1,273,342. Mattresses. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. April 30, 1969 [Jan.31, 1968], No.5041/68. Heading A4M. A fluid mattress comprises a plurality of discrete independently depressible cells 13a, 13b, 13c which are formed from a flexible material having air escape holes therethrough e.g. a porous material or a non-porous material in which the holes are formed by a sewing machine, at least some of the cells being inflatable independently of others. A frame comprising a pair of articulated tubes 20, carries a plurality of rods 25 extending laterally between adjacent pairs of cells and supporting them by passing through loops 26 positioned alternatively on adjacent cells. Air is supplied to the cells from a compressor via flow control valves (30), Fig.6 (not shown), and tubes 20, lateral cells being joined together by eyelets 32 such that each group of cells associated with an articulation of the tube is separately inflatable. The lateral cells may be integrally formed with gussets or fillets being provided between the cells, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown). The cell may also be formed so that it is of general arcuate form when unrestrained and inflated and is substantially horizontal when restrained, Figs. 10 and 11 (not shown). After bathing a person on the matress escaping cell inflation assists in drying the body. The inflation pressure of associated groups of cells may be raised and lowered resulting in vertical movement of the body limbs.
