Abstract
127,299. Smith, G. P. Bragg-, Desbleds, L. B., and Aeronautical Institute of Great Britain. April 5, 1917. Framework; planes, construction of.-A girder construction applicable generally, but especially to planes and other parts of aircraft, comprises upper and lower members connected by an intermediate member formed of a continuous channel member having its flanges cut away to permit it to be folded to a zigzag or rectangular formation. Fig. 3 shows a spar composed of upper and lower channels 5 connected by a channel member 4 bent into 'zigzag form, the flanges of the channel 4 being cut away at the bends. The member 4 is secured between the flanges of the members 5 by rivets or bolts. The ends of the spar may be formed by bending the various members or by a separate member 13. Struts or the like may be connected to knuckle or other fittings 10<a> formed on a bolt attached to the spar. Fig. 6 shows the invention applied to the rib of an aileron, the upper and lower members 14 being in one piece; the flanges are cut away at the ends 15, 16 to form apertures to receive spars. An intermediate spar 18 may be secured between two vertical channels 16<a>, 17, being riveted between a plate 19, Fig. 7, attached to the channel 16<a>, and flanges 21, Fig. 8, secured to the channel 17. Fig. 11 shows another method of forming the nose of the rib. Various forms of channel section are shown on the drawings.
