Abstract

1,272,798. Exothermic gas phase reaction. H. F. A. TOPSOE. 22 Sept., 1970 [27 Oct., 1969], No. 52506/69. Heading B1X. [Also in Division C2] In the low temperature catalytic synthesis of methanol from carbon oxides and hydrogen, the reaction gas is passed through the catalyst beds 5, 6, 7 via heat plenums 8, led out via heat plenums 9 through gas exits 10 and 13 to heat exchangers (not shown) and returned through gas inlets 11 and 14, the sections being separated by gas tight partitions 4 and the gas distribution through the catalyst being controlled by gas redistribution plates 12 and 15, the product gas mixture being finally led out through exit 3. In the process, the heat generated by the reaction is used via the heat exchangers, for steam generation or boiler feed-water preheating.
