A conjugate wheel dresser comprises an elevator block carrying a pair of rotatable dressing cutters. As described, the wheel dresser is incorporated in a machine having a grinding wheel 24 for grinding the conical race track and flat rib of tapered roller bearing cones 19, the dresser having one cutter 34 for dressing the race track forming portion of the grinding wheel and a second cutter 35 for dressing the rib-forming portion of the grinding wheel. The workpieces 19 are fed singly from a magazine 17 by a loader arm 18 which carries the workpieces along an arcuate path 20 to be deposited on shoes at a workstation and rotated by a magnetic chuck 22. The grinding wheel is cross-fed in the direction of the arrow 13 to effect grinding of the workpiece. The dresser 28 is mounted on a workslide 14 which is movable in the direction of arrow 15 between grinding and dressing positions. A base-plate 29 of the dresser is adjustable about a pivot 31 on the sub-base 30 of the workslide, and the dresser consists of a cylinder block 38 having anti-friction slides 37 on which the elevator block 36 is vertically movable by an hydraulic piston and cylinder 40. Each of the cutter spindles 61, 69 is motor driven, and spindle 61 is adjustable about a horizontal pivot 60 to tilt the dressing cutter 34 so that the track forming profile of the grinding wheel is shaped so as to produce a crown on the track portion ground on the workpiece. The cutter spindle 69 is mounted on a swivel plate 64 adjustable about a pivot 63 and is also adjustable along a gib 67 on the swivel plate and along a gib 20 on gib plate 66 perpendicular to gib 67. In operation, the dresser is adjusted about the pivot 31 and the cutter spindles adjusted on the elevator block 36. After each or a number of grinding operations, the cylinder 40 is actuated to raise the elevator block which is hydraulically locked in its upper position and the workslide is moved to the dressing position. The hydraulic lock is then released so that the elevator block is lowered by gravity at a rate determined by a flow valve, the dressing cutters dressing the wheel surfaces in sequence; the lower position of the elevator block is hydraulically clamped, and the workslide is returned to the grinding position. The slides of the elevator block are protected by a guard 51 and accordian-type bellows 53.
