Abstract

[Also in Division C6] A process for preparing an iso-α-acid extract from lupulin substantially freed from hop residues involves subjecting the freed lupulin to treatment with an-aqueous alkaline solution at a pH of 8À5 to 9À5 to produce an aqueous extract containing iso-α-acids and separating unwanted solid vegetable matter therefrom. In a preferred procedure, the freed lupulin is first macerated and the macerated lupulin is treated by boiling it at a concentration of 10 g./litre for 30-45 minutes in aqueous sodium -carbonate solution at pH.9À0. The resulting extract may then be decanted from the sludge. Alternatively, the extract is acidified to pH 1À0 to precipitate the iso-α-acids, these are then settled with inert absorbent such as kieselguhr (or by centrifugation) and the settled solid matter is then extracted with hot sodium or potassium carbonate solution at pH 8-9.
