Abstract

1,272,282. Stern tube bearing. MICHEIL BEARINGS Ltd. 8 April, 1970 [10 April, 1969; 13 Jan., 1970], Nos. 18566/69 and 1707/70. Heading B7S. [Also in Division F2] In a ship stern tube assembly the aftermost bearing of propeller shaft 7 is a tilting journal pad bearing whose pads 2 are removable into the interior of the ship, which interior in the embodiment of Fig. 1 is oil reservoir 8. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 the lubrication of the bearing is provided by a self-lubricating system which includes oil sump 15 forward of the bearing. Oil pick-up ring 14 is removably secured to the propeller shaft and oil scraper 18 cooperates with the ring above the shaft. Ducting 19 directs oil removed from the ring by the scraper into recesses 2C of the bearing pads, the ring when moved leaving space for the pads to be withdrawn from the stern tube forwardly along the propeller shaft. An oil sump 15 may be water cooled.
