[Also in Division C2] Polymerization mixtures for the anionic polymerization of lactams are prepared by reacting lactams in molten state or in solution with alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxides or C 1-6 aliphatic alcoholates, the water or alcohol by-product of the reaction being simultaneously removed by means of a molecular sieve. Specified lactams are those with 3 to 15 carbons in the ring and C-alkyl derivatives thereof and corresponding bislactams.
