Abstract

1,272,070. Proofing against fire. ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd. 27 Feb., 1970 [28 Feb., 1969 (2)], Nos. 10780/69 and 10781/69. Heading DIP. [Also in Divisions C3] Keratinous fibres, e.g. wool, are flameproofed by impregnation at pH 4-7 with an aqueous solution comprising a mixture or reaction product of (a) a tris(hydroxymethyl) phosphine salt (THP), (b) a bifunctional compound reactible with HCHO and having 2 H atoms attached to N or linked to C in an aromatic nucleus and/or a methylol derivative thereof and (c) a methylol or methoxymethoylol compound having a functionality of 3 or more and capable of crosslinking with THP and keratin, followed by heat curing and treatment with an oxidizing agent. The salt (a) may be the chloride, the compound (b) urea or thiourea and the compound (c) melamine or trimethylolmelamine. A pH buffer may be present, e.g. triethanolamine. H 2 O 2 may be used as oxidant, following curing at, e.g. 80-160‹C for 4-30 min. The impregnating solution may comprise a two-component pack comprising a solution of (a) and (b) and a separate solution of (c) and the pH buffer, such that the combined solution has pH 4-7.
