Positive - driving bands and pulleys.- In gearing comprising a wire rope furnished with balls a engaging recesses in pulleys d, each ball is made with an axial passage of varying diameter, and is secured to the rope by being pressed over a core of steel &c. inserted between the strands of the rope so as to lie against a shoulder in the axial passage. Some or all of the recesses in one or both pulleys are fitted with spring-pressed pushpieces f which, when depressed by the balls, connect the pulley to its shaft, or actuate clutch mechanism, or make electric contact between the pulley and its shaft, which are normally insulated from each other. The device may be used for the production of sparks for ignition purposes. The balls may be replaced by cylinders or double conical bodies, and may be so shaped that only some of them actuate the push-pieces.
