Abstract
1,271,193. Consuming noxious gases. PROCTOR & SCHWARTZ Inc. 13 July, 1970 [25 July, 1969], No. 33905/70. Heading F4B. Apparatus for consuming noxious gases from a drier, oven or kiln comprises a series of chambers 1A-1D each formed with flues 10 packed with particulate ceramic material, steel or other heat resisting material and opening into an upper space 13 having a burner 8, lower ducts 19 from each flue opening into a gas inlet main 5 through flap valves 22a-22b and into an outlet main 6 through flap valves 22g-22l. The chambers 1A-1D are arranged as shown as modular units each having its own inlet main section 5 on the outside and sharing an outlet main section 6 in the centre. Gases to be treated enter the apparatus by a duct 15 passing through a fan chamber 16 duct 17 and distribution header 18 on their way to the mains 5. Treated gases are extracted from outlet main 6 by a fan 21 and discharged into exhaust stack 72. The flap valves 22a-22b and 22g-22l are opened in timed sequence by cam followers 25 on a shaft 24 operated by cams (26, Fig. 5) on a cam-shaft 27. The valve timing is such that inlet valve 22a and outlet valve 22g on the same duct 19 are never open together so that incoming gases pass up a chamber 10 where the pollutant is ignited or oxidized, this process being completed in space 13 and down a different chamber 10 heating up its packing material 12. Each duct 19 has an air inlet tube (30, Fig. 3) with its own flap valve (31) near the inlet end of the duct and when both of its valves 22 are closed said flap valve (31) is open to a maximum extend owing to the negative pressure in the system. The air so drawn in purges the gases remaining in the particular flue 10. When the duct 19 has only its outlet valve 22 open the flap valve (31) closes by gravity cutting off any air supply. The central portion of a duct 19 can be isolated by closing butterfly valves (51, 53, Fig. 3) therein, whereupon the temperature of the packing 12 in its associated flue tends to build up burning off solid material which may have collected in the upper part of said packing.
