Abstract

1,270,968. Peroxyalkanoic acids. SANDOZ Ltd. 22 July, 1969 [30 July, 1968], No. 36744/69. Heading C2C. Solutions of C 2-4 aliphatic peroxycarboxylic acids are obtained by reacting an aliphatic carboxylic anhydride containing 4 to 8 carbon atoms with a solution comprising hydrogen peroxide and an alkyl anthraquinone, the hydrogen peroxide preferably being produced in situ by oxidation of the alkyltetrahydroanthraquinone produced by partial hydrogenation of some of the anthraquinone. The reaction is preferably conducted in the presence of an acid catalyst, e.g. H 2 SO 4 or p-toluenesulphonic acid and the peroxycarboxylic acid/carboxylic acid mixture removed from the reaction pool by distillation, the pool then being treated and reused.
