A can 1, Fig. 1, which may be readily assembled for the coiling and compression of sliver therein and dismantled into nesting components to facilitate, conveyance when empty, comprises arcuate plates 2, with reinforcing ribs 5, arranged with openings 3 and secured by reinforcing rings 4, 4'. In the operation of coiling sliver from an overhead wheel 10 into cans, each can is supported on and rotates with a block 7 driven by ring gear 8 and worm 9. Sliver accumulates on and is compressed by a bottom plate 11 which is free to be lowered and raised in the can but held against rotation relative thereto by portions 12 projecting through openings 3. Portions 12 rest on a support plate 13 attached to chains 16 passing around pulleys 18 and secured to drums 20 driven by motor 21 through gears 22, 23, and shaft 19 so as to raise the plate 11 to the top of the can preparatory to coiling and then allow its discent under mounting pressure of the sliver against the constraint of the motor 21 during coiling. Timing cam 26 operates a switch 27 immediately before portions 12 strike the upper ring 4 so as to brake motor 21 through a voltage regulator 25, which, as a result of a signal derived from a detector 24 measuring the angle of rotation of shaft 19, also controls the torque exerted by motor 21 in accordance with the amount of lowering of plate 11. In the operation of mechanism for automatically exchanging full cans for empty cans, Figs. 5, 6, when the can 1" becomes full, plate 13 is lowered into alignment with the machine frame surface 29. Simultaneously, a motor 53 is energised to rotate a gear wheel 51 so that a sleeve 46 and arm lever 59 integral therewith are lowered to a position whereat a limit switch 62 stops the motor 53. Divisional levers 60, 60', of lever 59 group the empty and full cans 1, 1", and then rotate with the exchange shaft 38 (driven by a motor 45) so that can 1" is urged from block 7 partly along path 35 and into a delivery path 33; the waiting can 1' is urged along path 35 onto a rotary block 7. The motor 45 is then deenergised and motor 53 energised to raise sleeve 46 and hence the arm 59 to rest position 59' whereat limit switch 61 stops motor 53. Meanwhile motor 21 runs to raise plate 13 to position 13' whereat it is below the level of the position 59' with plate 11 raised to the position 11' in readiness for the next coiling cycle.
