A device for remotely controlling, e.g. a coal-cutting machine comprises a transmitter having a high carrier frequency generator, a device for modulating the carrier frequency, a first low frequency oscillator normally coupled to the modulator and supplying a frequency which is adjustable over a given range and a second low frequency oscillator which may be temporarily coupled to the modulator in place of the first oscillator and supplying one of a number of discrete frequencies, and a receiver, having a low frequency filter for the adjustable frequency and for each of the discrete modulating frequencies, a short term memory connected between the filter associated with the first oscillator and the corresponding controlled member in the machine and a holding circuit for stopping the machine if no modulating frequency is being received. The discrete low frequencies are used to control discrete operations in the machine and the variable low frequency to control the speed and direction of operation of the machine. The variable frequency is recognized in the receiver by a pair of filters respectively tuned to the highest and lowest frequencies of the range and arranged in parallel so that their response curves intersect at the central frequency of the range. The short term memory is used to maintain the speed of the machine during periods when one of the discrete frequencies is being received. The carrier frequency is modulated by an intermediate circuit generating pulses of a predetermined duration at the frequency of the low modulating frequency employed. A lamp is provided for indicating a drop in the quality of the connection between the transmitter and the receiver. The holding circuit disconnects the power supply to the controlled machine if no modulated frequency is being received.
