Abstract
1,270,589. Grinding. CORNING GLASS WORKS. 30 Dec., 1969 [30 Dec., 1968], No. 63220/69. Heading B3D. An apparatus for bevelling the edges or rims of vessels, such as television tubes 70, comprises a rotatable shaft 22 having a plate member 64 for supporting the vessel with its edge or rim depending, and first and second motor-driven grinding wheels 95, 96 carried at the upper ends of respective arms 91, 92 for grinding bevels on the inner and outer borders of the edge or rim. The shaft 22 is rotatably supported in an upright column 16 and is driven by gearing 23, 24 from a motor 26. The plate can be raised and lowered by pneumatic pressure supplied through conduits 100, 101 to a rotary union 28 connected to passages within the shaft to engage and locate the vessel and lower it so that its rim rests on rollers 21 carried by webs 18 extending from the column 16. Each grinding wheel 95, 96 is driven by a respective pneumatic motor 93, 94 each carried on an arm 91, 92 secured to a block 73, 74 pivotally mounted on a platform 11. Horizontal weights 77 act on the blocks to urge the grinding wheels into engagement with the inner and outer borders of the rim or edge of the vessel 20, and pneumatic devices 79, 82 are actuatable to urge plungers 80 against extensions 81 on the blocks to retract the grinding wheels.
