Abstract

1,270,319. Explosive compositions. IRECO CHEMICALS. 5 Sept., 1969, No. 43967/69. Heading C1D. An explosive slurry is prepared by aerating a solution containing an inorganic oxidizer salt and a foam stabilizing agent to produce fine gas bubbles therein, and then mixing the solution with particulate sensitizing solids. Aeration lowers the density and increases the detonation velocity, sensitivity, and seismic strength of the composition. Apparatus is described with reference to drawings in which a concentrated solution of ammonium nitrate containing a foam stabilizing agent is divided into two streams, one flowing direct to a mixer and the other passing via a blending device where air (or N 2 or CO 2 ) is beaten into the solution. The slurry may be pumped into containers or direct into a bore-hole; the degree of aeration may be varied so that the density is different at different parts of the bore-hole. The foam stabilizing agent may be guar gum, flour, or precooked starch; borax, potassium or sodium dichromate, or tannic acid may act as cross-linking agents; guar gum may be added dispersed in an alcohol, glycol, glycol ether, or formamide. Additional foam promoting agents are a linear aliphatic ethoxylate sulphate or an organic phosphate ester. Solids specified for addition to the composition are Al, sulphur, gilsonite, powdered coal, TNT, and smokeless powder. The oxidizer salt may include sodium nitrate and also chlorates and perchlorates.
