In a method of hanging multiple strings of tubing in an underwater well, a tubing hanger C, Fig. 1, supporting tubing string Tl, is landed on shoulder 9 of casing hanger B in well head A, a spring loaded rib 24 engaging well head slot 25 to orient hanger C. Tapered sleeve 21 is then lowered to move dogs 10 sideways into groove 8 to anchor hanger C in hanger B. Tubing string T2, supported by mandrel 37, running tool 47 and tubing 57, is lowered through bore 35 until mandrel shoulder 42 seats on shoulder 43. Inherently contractible ring 46 is expanded into groove 45 by shoulder 42, and kept expanded by running tool flange 53. Tubing 57 and running tool 47 are then rotated until, Fig. 3, flange 53 is raised above ring 46, allowing the ring to contract into bore 35 to prevent upward movement of mandrel 37. Running tool 47 may then be unscrewed and_withdrawn. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 4, inherently expansible ring 146 is held contracted between the tapered end flange 146b of running tool 147 and mandrel 137. The unscrewing of tool 147 from seated mandrel 137 raises flange 146b and allows ring 146 to expand into groove 145, thus preventing upward movement of mandrel 137. In both embodiments the ring is moved into its associated groove when the running tool is screwed onto the seated mandrel, thus allowing tubing string T2 to be withdrawn.
