Abstract
1,269,450. Solution mining. OCCIDENTAL PETROLEUM CORP. 25 Sept., 1970 [2 Oct., 1969], No. 45691/70. Heading E1F. A solution mine is formed by sinking a well 10 into a soluble formation, injecting fluid into the well to form a fracture pool 22 in the formation and after determining the extent of the pool sinking a further well 24 into the pool while maintaining the pool under a positive pressure. Where the formation is a salt deposit the fluid may be water, brines, acidic or caustic solutions, inert hydrocarbon liquids, or inert gases, the hydrocarbon liquids and the inert gases being replaced by a salt solvent when communication between the wells is established. If the pool drifts upwardly a fracture pool 32 extending from the well 24 may be formed and the flow through the formation may be reversed. If brine or water is the fluid it can be loaded with a heavy salt component to increase its density to avoid preferential dissolving of the roof of the fracture.
