The tension of material being wound into a package is automatically controlled in dependence on the output of a storage device to which signals dependent on a comparison between the length of wound material and the number of revolutions of a previously wound pilot package are applied to obtain a package of the same size. In Fig. 1, material 2 passing a friction tensioning device 4 is wound up on a reel 3. Tape recorders 15, 16 are respectively driven by reel 3 and the material 2 and, during the winding of a first reel, signals from a pulse generator are applied simultaneously through heads 17, 18 to the two tapes. Then, when subsequent reels are being wound, the recorders are started from the same initial positions and switches 25, 26 changed over to play back the pulses through heads 17, 18 and amplifiers 27, 28 to operate motors 29, 30 driving a differential gear 20. If the relationship between reel speed and material speed does not correspond to that for the first reel it is corrected automatically by an output in the appropriate sense from the differential gear adjusting tensioning device 4 through a rod 22. As a result all the reels are the same size and contain the same length of material. Alternatively, or in addition, the differential gear may control a device pressing on winding 24 to correct its size. Modifications are referred to in which pulses dependent on a predetermined movement of the reel or material are recorded on a single recorder driven by the material or reel respectively so that, during playback, tension is controlled in dependence on a comparison between pulses from the recorder and pulses resulting from predetermined movement of the reel or the material.
