Novel compounds of the formula in which C n F 2n+1 represents a straight or branched perfluoro chain, n having a value of 1 to 20, X- is a halide, sulphate, alkylsulphate, phosphate, sulphonate, alkylsulphonate, arylsulphonate, acetate, or hydroxyl anion, and R<SP>1</SP> is C 1-8 alkyl, R<SP>11</SP> and R<SP>111</SP> may be the same or different and are C 1-8 alkyl, C 5-10 cycloalkyl, C 3-8 alkenyl, C 5-9 cycloalkenyl, or aryl radicals, or R<SP>11</SP> and R<SP>111</SP> together form a divalent radical linked to nitrogen by two single bonds, or R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>11</SP>, R<SP>111</SP> and N jointly represent an aromatic tertiary amine radical derived from a C 5-18 heterocyclic compound containing nitrogen as the hetero atom, may be obtained by reacting a polyfluoroalkane halide having the formula C n F 2n+1 CH 2 CH 2 X in which X is I or Br, with an aromatic heterocyclic tertiary amine, or by reacting a tertiary fluoro-amine of the type C n F 2n+1 CH 2 CH 2 NR<SP>11</SP>R<SP>111</SP> with a compound of formula R<SP>1</SP>X. The products are useful as surface active agents, particularly as levelling agents in varnishes and waxes, as emulsifiers, polymer additives, germicides, and for imparting oil- and water-repellant properties to a variety of substances.
