Abstract

1,269,072. DIR hydroquinones in photographic silver halide materials. EASTMAN KODAK CO. April 1, 1969 [April 1, 1968], No. 16868/69. Heading G2C. A photographic material comprises a support carrying at least two superposed silver halide layers sensitive to different spectral regions or separated by a filter layer whereby each layer is adapted to be separately imagewise exposed and the silver halide emulsion layer or layers not contiguous to the support contains a development inhibitor releasing (DIR) hydroquinone compound (which is a non-diffusible, heterocyclic thiosubstituted hydroquinone which reacts with oxidized colour developing agent to form a diffusible mercaptan development inhibitor) and has a finer grain silver halide emulsion than that of the emulsion contiguous to the support, and at least one of the silver halide emulsion layers contains a non-diffusing, dye-forming coupler. All the silver halide emulsion layers may contain non-diffusing dye-forming couplers, the coupler in each layer forming a different colour dye from those in any of the other layers. Many colour couplers are specified. The DIR compound preferably has the formula:- wherein Q and Q<SP>1</SP> are each H or an alkaline splittable masking group, -S-Rad is a monothio radical which is split when the compound crossoxidizes with oxidized colour developer, Rad is a photographically inert diffusible carbon containing heterocyclic radical, Ball is a photographically inert, organic radical which renders the compound non-diffusing, Q<SP>2</SP> is H, sulphonyl, carboxyl or an alkali metal salt thereof and Q<SP>3</SP> and Q<SP>4</SP> which may be the same or different each represent H, or alkyl of up to 10 carbons. Preferably there are two silver halide emulsion layers - a silver chlorobromide emulsion containing the DIR compound and a silver bromoiodide emulsion. One emulsion may be green-sensitized and the other is preferably unsensitized which embodiment gives a black and a coloured image (see EX2). The filter layer is preferably bleached during photographic processing, and may be a layer of yellow Carey-Lea silver (see EX7). There may be a hydrophilic colloid layer between each silver halide emulsion layer to delay diffusion of the photographic processing solutions. Examples 12 and 13 relate to the diffusible dye transfer process using materials of this invention. These materials are useful in aerial reconnaissance. The DIR hydroquinone compounds can also be used in interlayers to produce a uniform increase in sharpness of each of the dye images, since these DIR compounds are colourless and do not form dyes.
