Abstract

1,268,374. Copolyamides. B.P. CHEMICALS (U.K.) Ltd. 13 May, 1969 [29 May, 1968], No. 25611/68. Heading C3R. A polyamide is constituted by residues of (a) a diacid component comprising as major constituent iso- or iso- and tere-phthalic acid, (b) a diamine component comprising isophorone diamine as major constituent and (c) an aminoacid component comprising 6-aminohexanoic acid as major constituent, 25 to 80 mol. per cent of the total residues being 6-aminohexanoic acid residues. Specified optional minor constituents are adipic, trimethyladipic, sebacic and dodeoanedioic acids, dodecamethylene, 2,4,4- and 2,2,4-trimethylhexamethylene and m- and p-xylylene diamines, and 12-aminododecanoic acid. Different stages of the polycondensation, which may be continuous, may be effected in different apparatus, e.g. a stirred reactor may precede a screw reactor. A stabilizer, e.g. NH 4 , Na or a trihydrocarbyl phosphite or chain terminator, e.g. a mono-acid or -amine may be present. In examples, copolymers of inherent viscosities ranging from 0.719 to 2.538 are obtained. The products are stated to be tough, transparent, amorphous polymers useful for compression, blow or injection moulding; extrusion; vacuum, cold or soft forming; coatings; rigid foams; and extruded or cold drawn monofilaments. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 976,007, 977,868 and 1,100,972.
