A fastening comprises a catch member 5 pivotally mounted to engage a keeper 4 by operating a handle 19 and a catch retaining slide 20 spring loaded to the catch retaining position in which it prevents movement of the catch member from the releasing to the fastening position and in which it is engageable by the keeper or a member associated therewith so that it is displaceable to allow fastening movement of the catch member 5 when the keeper is engageable by the catch member. The fastening is described as securing a vehicle boot lid. The catch member pivots on a pin 6 in a housing 1 attached to the boot lid 3. A claw 8 on the catch member engages the U-shaped keeper 4 when the boot lid is closed. The pin extends through an elongated aperture 22 in the slide 20 which has a step 26 in which engages a pin 27 projecting from the catch member 5 when in the inoperative position thereby rendering the operating handle 19 inoperative. As the boot lid closes a limb 14 of the keeper engages in a recess in the adjacent edge of the slide 20 and displaces the slide against the action of a spring 25 thereby disengaging the step 26 from the pin 27 and freeing the catch member to be rotated by the handle to secure the keeper.
