Abstract
1,268,223. Isolators and phase-shifters. SOC. LIGNES TELEGRAPHIQUES ET TELEPHONIQUES. 27 March, 1969 [4 April, 1968], No. 16186/69. Heading HlW. A strip-line isolator or phase-shifter comprises a cruciform conductive pattern 4, 5, 7 arranged upon a dielectric substrate 1 which carries a conductive coating on the opposite face. The symmetrical arms 7 of the cross are connected to external circuitry and the arms 4, 5 terminated in impedances different from the characteristic impedance of the arms. If the arms 4, 5 differ in length by #/4 at the operative frequency, a region of circular polarization will exist at junction 6 and within this region a gyromagnetic element (not shown) is embedded in the substrate 1. The element may consist of a disc or sphere of yttrium or gadolinium iron garnet subject to a magnetic bias field directed perpendicularly to the substrate. This may be supplied by a permanent magnet (not shown) attached to the lower surface of the substrate. The arms 4, 5 are terminated in reactive impedances formed by short sections of line of reduced width. This improves the band-width of the device. An iterative version of the device comprises a number of cruciform sections connected in tandem.
