Abstract

1,268,046. Boring machines. VANDERVELL PRODUCTS Ltd. 10 June, 1969 [10 June, 1968], No. 27565/68. Heading B3C. [Also in Division F2] A boring machine for machining an internal surface of a cylindrical or half a cylindrical bearing liner comprises a rotatable boring bar 20 having cutting tools 23, 24, means to rotate the boring bar, an electric motor 16, a support 26 for a bearing liner, the bar 20 being supported by gas bearings. These bearings are in housing 21 there being a journal bearing, Fig. 2, and thrust bearings, Fig. 4. The journal bearing provides a radial pressure of 450,000 lb./in. whilst the thrust bearings give a thrust of 700,000 lb./in., there being two thrust bearings acting in opposite directions. A rotor of the electric motor is also mounted in a similar journal gas bearing. The electric motor 16 is mounted on a slide 13 which is fed by an hydraulic or pneumatic ram 14. Liner support 26 has a liner ejector plunger 32 and is fed by a ram 29. A nozzle 34 directs coolant on to the working area. When machining half a cylindrical bearing axis 18 can be inclined to the liner axis with the cutting radius of cutter 23 being slightly larger than that for cutter 24 and its centre of rotation further from the inner surface of the liner so that relief areas are formed adjacent the ends of a liner.
