Abstract

1,267,855. Coating glass surfaces. OWENSILLINOIS Inc. 8 Aug., 1969, No. 39758/69. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions C1 and C3] The abrasion resistance of a glass surface, e.g. of a bottle, jar, tumbler or other container or of sheet glass, is increased by treating the glass surface with a titanium or tin-containing compound which is capable of being pyrolyzed to form an oxide of titanium or tin on the glass surface, while the surface is at a temperature at least as high as the pyrolyzing temperature of the compound, e.g. 700‹- 1300‹F, cooling the treated glass surface and applying thereto, e.g. by spraying, an aqueous medium containing the reaction product of a hydroxylated organic compound and an interpolymer of methyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride. The surface of a glass article may be treated with the titanium or tin compound soon after the article leaves the glass-forming machine as it is being conveyed to the annealing lehr, cooled in the annealing lehr and sprayed with an aqueous solution of the hydroxylated organic compound-interpolymer reaction product near the cold end of the lehr. Suitable titanium compounds are alkyl titanates in which the alkyl group contains 1-8 carbon atoms and titanium tetrahalides and suitable tin compounds are stannic halides, stannous dihalides, alkyl stannic carboxylates and carboxylic acid salts of stannous tin, the surface preferably being treated with stannic halide vapours. The interpolymer of methyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride may have the formula in which n is an integer of 300-6000. The hydroxylated organic compound may be a primary, secondary or tertiary alcohol, preferably an aliphatic alkanol having 5-20 carbon atoms, phenol, phenyl-methanol, -ethanol, -butanol, -decanol, -penta decanol or -octadecanol, polyvinyl alcohol or an alkylene oxide adduct of an alcohol, phenol or fatty acid. The aqueous medium may contain 5% by weight or less of the reaction product.
