Abstract

[Also in Divisions G1 and G3] A detector of infra-red radiation comprises two semi-conductor elements 11, 12 mounted on an insulating plate 13 with a metal shield 14 preventing the radiation from reaching one element 12 which is used to control the temperature of the detector and the change in resistance of the other element 11 is used to indicate the intensity of the radiation. The semi-conductor material exhibits a large change of resistance for a small change in temperature around a particular characteristic temperature. Suitable materials are vanadium dioxide, divanadium trioxide, titanium monoxide or silver sulphide. In the instrument shown in Fig. 4, the detector is mounted at the bottom of a cylindrical tube 21 which is coated internally with a black resistive film energized through electrodes 23, 24 to provide heating of the detector. In operation any change in the resistance of the shielded element is detected at 25 and electrodes 23, 24 energized in a way to return the ambient temperature to the characteristic temperature. The tube 21 also acts as a standard black body radiator for calibration purposes. The detector is preferably made by providing cavities in the alumina or quartz plate 13 which are filled with suitable semi-conductor material and the whole plate sintered. If no cavities are provided in the plate the elements are mado in the usual way by vacuum evaporation or sputtering or printing.
